CBS (Columbia) UK releases: 1961-1969

image

In 1961 CBS Records was formed to house Columbia Records acts and releases outside of the United States and Canada.

Thirteen of the original fourteen Columbia albums* were released in the UK (presumably Irish releases were also these UK pressings). These LPs have this (left) Orange label. There are some slight variations on these labels, primarily numbering. Some contain the prefix "BPG" (mono) or "SBPG" (stereo).

*I have not been able to verify a UK (CBS LP) release of The Clancy Brothers Christmas.

Freedom's Sons

* The UK release of Freedom's Sons is different from the American version:
1) Many of the spoken song introductions are longer.
2) The song "Freedom's Sons" is the full version, and was edited on the American release.
3) The song "Green in the Green" is omitted—and probably not even from this concert.
4) "The Fool" is added to the 1916 Medley.

In my opinion, the UK release is the superior album.

UK releases: 1970's & 80's…

Left is the label used for 70s & 80s CBS UK releases.

The Boys Won't Leave the Girls Alone: 1984 - CBS 32504 LP
I don't know if there are other Clancy/Makem UK (re)releases—in this form (with this label).

Shanachie (Columbia re-releases)

In 1987, Shanachie Records (re) released three Columbia albums, that had (by this time), gone out of print.

Hearty and Hellish: Shanachie 52014
The Boys Won't Leave the Girls Alone: Shanachie 52015
Christmas with: Shanachie 52017

The fourth (out of print) album, The First Hurrah!, was not released by Shanachie*. This is the only CBTM album that has not been re-issued (in its entirety), in any form, since going out of print, sometime in late 60's or in 1970's.

*According to Sean McGuiness, "Paddy Clancy told me (circa 1994) that Shanachie cut a deal with Sony to release Hearty & Hellish and BWLTGA. Had those releases gone well, they would have then released The First Hurrah, then perhaps more Columbia lps. The problem was that the Sony royalties were so high that it was financially impractical for Shanachie to continue down this road and that is why the releases went out of print (and why others were not released)."

Note: Christmas (with the Clancy Brothers) was also released at this time by Shanachie. In addition, Shanachie did a very nice with these releases, and because they went out of print (relatively) quickly, they are fairly hard to find. I would consider these Shanachie (re) releases more collectable than the Columbia re-prints from the 1970's & 1980's (with burnt orange label).

Rego Release…

Rego is an USA based label, specializing in Irish music, founded in 1969, by Irish musician Paddy Noonan. Rego re-issued The Irish Uprising, on vinyl, in approximately 1980 (with this label) I would consider it more of an odd item, than rare, but a little harder to find, none the less. To my knowledge, this is its only re-release.
